Partition of States in the United States

Article IV, Section. 3, Clause 1 of the United States Constitutions provides:
:''New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.''
Four U.S. States have been created through the partition of existing States, as distinguished from the creation of States from unorganized territory ceded to the United States by existing States.
==Kentucky==

After the American Revolution, certain counties of Virginia beyond the Cumberland Gap became known as Kentucky County.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 publisher=Ezilon Search )〕 Eventually, the residents of Kentucky County petitioned for a separation from Virginia. Ten constitutional conventions were held in the Constitution Square Courthouse in Danville between 1784 and 1792. In 1790, Kentucky's delegates accepted Virginia's terms of separation, and a state constitution was drafted at the final convention in April 1792. On June 1, 1792, Kentucky became the fifteenth State admitted to the union.
